Small budget moves
Preparation, packaging, packing, moving home insurance and time saving ideas!
Keep your removal tips handy so that you can refer back to them!
Prepare early
You don’t want to be caught gathering everything together on the morning of the move. This leads to broken property, items packed chaotically and high stress levels. Start as many weeks before the move date as you can. Allocate spaces in your home where boxes can be kept where they will not interfere with daily life too much. Try to pack the items that you need most into the van last so that you can access them first.
Use quality materials
You can buy quality packaging materials from Quick Flit, but you’ll be surprised what you can get for free. There are a huge variety of different boxes you can get from super markets, neighbours, storage companies along with the correct packing materials. You will also need: packing tape, bubble wrap, zip tie bags, labels and marker pens.
Don't forget
Cardboard is not the strongest material for packing. Ensure you do not overpack boxes, as they may break. Under fill to be safe rather than sorry. Use strong tape to strengthen the boxes as well as to seal them.
Moving home insurance
Make sure you have insured all your treasured household items.
Treasured items
If they break can never be replaced for sentimental reasons. Remember it is your responsibility to ensure items such as mirrors glass and the breakables are wrapped safely in newspapers or bubble-wrap if you have packed the boxes yourself and not got us to do it for you.
Time saving
Move small boxes to the main doorway or outside (if the weather is good!). This again will save on time. However do not attempt to move large, heavy or awkwardly shaped items. Leave that to our team.
Flat pack furniture that can be dismantled
Try to dismantle as much as you can before we arrive. This again will save you time and money. Just remember to keep all the parts together, either in a bag or taped to the item.
Lists
Write down a list of the items you will be taking, and try to divide them into separate boxes to make unpacking as easy and as straight forward as possible
Measuring up
Will that large item go through your door? If not can it be dismantled? This is one that gets overlooked sometimes and can be a nightmare.
Flat moves
If you live in a flat on an upper floor the job is done much quicker if there are more men on the site. So let us know – 2 or three men on the job will mean a faster job and a lower bill.
Label properly
You should label boxes with the room it’s going to and a brief summary of what’s in the box so there’s no confusion when you’re unpacking. Colour coordinated stickers/labels on boxes can be very helpful and easy to unload of the lorry into the correct room if you don’t want to write a short novella on the boxes
Pack a survival box
Pack the things you use every day and night in a separate bag and keep this with you at all times. Items such as medicine, face cream, toothbrush, toilet roll, change of clothes, phone chargers etc will all come in handy.
Well there we go. If you can manage to stick to as many of these bits of advice as you can you will make the move as straight forward and efficient as possible.
Good luck!
